Is it ok to cook with rusty Flavorizer bars?

Weber’s gas barbecues, such as the Spirit and Genesis ranges, have Flavorizer bars underneath the grates. These Flavorizer bars serve two main purposes, they protect the burner tubes from fats and juices dripping directly into the flame ports, and they help boost the delicious barbecue flavour that your Weber provides.
Flavorizer bars mimic hot coals when cooking on a Weber gas barbecue. When fats and juices hit the Flavorizer bars, they are vaporised and that flavour is injected back into your food, giving that distinctive barbecue flavour we all strive for.
Because of their purpose, your Flavorizer bars will experience wear and tear and, over time, will rust. Any rust through of your Flavorizer bars would be covered under your barbecue’s warranty, but surface rust is to be expected and will not prevent the Flavorizer bars from doing their job.
How can I maintain my Flavorizer bars?
You do not have to clean your Flavorizer bars, surface rust will not impede their purpose and can be left alone. However, if you want to increase the lifespan of your Flavorizer bars, there are a couple of things that you can do.
Rotating your Flavorizer bars is one way to help them last. Most people will naturally favour cooking on certain areas of their grates, meaning some Flavorizer bars will experience more wear and tear than others. You can rotate your Flavorizer bars to reduce this.
We’d recommend both flipping your Flavorizer bars lengthwise, so the front is now at the back and vice versa, and rotating the bars to different positions in the grill. For example, moving each bar one space to the right. This will ensure that your Flavorizer bars are receiving equal use thereby increasing their lifespan. How often you do this will vary based on how much you use your grill.
Another way to maintain your Flavorizer bars is to clean them of surface rust. WD-40 is a great product for cleaning off surface rust.
When should I replace my Flavorizer bars?
Your Flavorizer bars do not need to be replaced if they are only exhibiting surface rust. It is only when your Flavorizer bars begin to rust through that they would need to be replaced.
If you experienced rust through within your Flavorizer bar’s warranty period, this would be covered under your warranty. For porcelain-enamelled Flavorizer bars, the warranty period is 2 years and stainless steel Flavorizer bars are warrantied from 5 to 10 years depending on your barbecue. To make a warranty claim contact the retailer you purchased the barbecue from or Weber directly.
Replacement Flavorizer bars can also be purchased if you need to replace parts that are out of warranty.
