What is the Weber GBS System?

The Weber® GBS® System offers a range of accessories that can be placed inside the hole left by the removable section of the grate in any barbecue with GBS® grates. This allows the accessories to heat up faster, as they are closer to the heat source. If your barbecue does not have a GBS® system you may find that you can purchase replacement grates which include the system.

When using your GBS® system we recommend you purchase agrate lifter, this will allow you to remove the circular section of grate whilst it is hot, abarbecue mittor gloves (S/MorL/XL) are suggested for handling the more cumbersome accessories.

The Accessories

GBS® Sear GrateSear Grate- The Weber® GBS® Sear Grate is perfect for use with charcoal barbecues, cast iron reaches temperatures up to 60% hotter than other metals, and retains the heat better. When food is seared at this temperature it undergoes a reaction called the Maillard reaction, this is a chemical reaction between reducing sugars and amino acids that gives browned food it's distinctive flavour. Not only does this sear grate give you amazing tasting food, but it also gives your meat those professional grade sear marks.

GBS® GriddleGriddle- The Weber® GBS® Griddle is ideal for cooking smaller items that otherwise may fall through the barbecue grates, such as bacon, seafood, onions, etc. Like the sear grate, this griddle is cast iron and holds heat well. Seasoning Cast Iron

The cast iron GBS® inserts are porcelain-enamelled, however, will still need seasoning before use, as well as maintained. Seasoning cast iron is very simple and, when done right, the accessories will last a lifetime.

  1. Scrub the accessory thoroughly with warm water and dish soap, ensure the accessory is completely dry before continuing to the next step
  2. Once the accessory is clean it is time to oil it, we recommend virgin olive oil. Buff the oil into the iron using a cloth or paper towel, make sure to buff all of the oil in as missed spots can form hardened drops or turn sticky
  3. Don't forget to oil the outside of the accessory too
  4. Place the accessory in the oven, with a baking tray underneath to catch any drips, and bake at 200°Centigrade for 10 minutes
  5. Allow the accessory to cool completely before use

After cleaning cast iron we recommend you heat it through to ensure that it is fully dry.
